I am an 8th grade girl's basketball player. Does anybody know good foods to eat before a game or good ways to calm my anxiety and pump me up? I'm a staring post if that helps. . . .

One thing an athlete needs, especially in a strenuous sport like basketball, is carbs for energy (fast burning energy). It is also true that carbs are one thing that make most people fat, but that is because few people live as strenuous a life as an athlete. Athletes burn off the fuel from heavy carbs, while the sedentary person simply packs on the pounds since unused carbs go straight to fat. You can eat a plate of pasta, but before a game you don't want to "pig out" as a very full belly may actually weight you down during the game since your body will alot more energy to digestion that you need for the game. Eat very well in the morning (lots of protein and carbs), eat a lighter lunch with a little less protein and a bit more carbs, and then an hour before the game chug a few carb bars and plenty of water or gator aid (this is assuming your games are in the evening). The heavy protein from the morning and lunch will keep your metabolism stable throughout the day and boost your endurance since it is also a slow burning fuel, the carbs will give you plenty of pent up energy for the game later. Just don't put too much in your stomach right before the game or it will slow you down. Another good rule of thumb is carbs before the workout (be it training or the game) and protein, copper and potassium after the workout to rebuild cells. Good luck and remember you will never be any better than you think you can be, so believe in yourself first and know you are never done learning.

Eat spaghetti and just don't be nervous. I never ate anything special or different before playing.
