The dissented the Church of England. Oddly enough, they followed England's methods, only they didn't practice religion in the same fashion. Quakers dissented from the society that dissented England...A cause and effect chain reaction so to speak.

King Henry VIII changed the church from Catholic to his newly created Anglican church of England, because he wanted to divorce his wife(he had several across the years) and the Catholic church would not allow it. The Puritans did not like the Anglican change or the new rules for the king's convenience. They went to the America's to start a "utopia" of their beliefs. That is why the US gov. is a checks and balances system, the Puritans refused to let one ruler (monarch) have all the power.

They left because they wanted to worship their own religion or gods because the king or whatever didn't let them worship their gods.
