how do i attach the beam coming out from the porch (the side beams) to the house. It is brick. The print shows it sits on 2 2x4s which will be tapconed to the wall toe nailing into these really wont do a lot. what are some ideas of what I can do to make this more substantial.

I dont want the porch to just fall away from the house. I was thinking of maybe bolting in joist hangers and then just cutting a kurf in the trim to cover.

I suggest a double 2 x ledger using concrete anchor bolts, threaded at the outer end. Drill a 3/8 hole or whatever accomodates, then with a nut on the leading end, hammer the bolt in, to the desired depth. With holes predrilled into the ledger, attach it with the nut and washer sold with the anchor bolt.

I did a Loft exactly this way, using 3/8 by 8 inches, into concrete and block. I suggest something more substantial than 2 x 4 however. I use 2 x 8 or 10. DO NOT use tapcons, even in a situation where it may be just shear weight, unless it happens to be lesser "studs" or into a floor. If your attaching rafters, and at an angle, cut a birds mouth in each, appropriately, and use the proper galvanized brackets, sold in any decent home store such as HD or Lowes.

Take a look at the Simpson Concealed Joist Tie (CJT3) on pg 186 of their 2006 catalog. Although the minimum joist size is a 4x8, you might be able to cut the CJT down to a smaller size for your application. Or the concept might be something to work with.
