I think the most important thing is realizing that you are giving the audience something they need -- information, entertainment, a trip down memory lane, maybe just a good laugh. All these things are valuable, and public speaking is a very effective way to do it.
Other than that, it's a matter of practice, practice, practice. Give as many speeches as you can, and also make notes and know what you are going to say before the speech. As you give more speeches, you'll be better able to "wing" it.
And, know how to push those butterflies just before going out aside. I think almost everyone gets a little stage fright, but remember that your speaking has value -- you aren't really speaking, you are helping out the audience -- and once you get started, those butterflies should go away.
Don't let one (or many!) bad experiences stop you! Just keep practicing!

Not wearing glasses and being on the homecoming court for 4 years... also, I was valedictorian in 6th grade, so I had to speak in front of a lot of people... I don't wear my glasses when I speak in front of a large group, so everybody just melts together... :-)

Scan over the heads of the people in the audience. Look at them but don't look directly at them. Pretend to make eye contact with different folks in different areas.

fWhen I was younger I was horofied of it.
Now I love it. It's thrilling.
Most people will tell you to take deep breathes or imagine people in there undies.
The truth is you need to be confident. Imaging others lower than you is no where near as good as just imaging yourself getting better :D
Look at just one of them in the audience. (maybe a friend) And act like your talking to them.
