when gas goes "stale" it is actually the sepparation of the chemicals in the fuel.

the gummy-clogging particles fall to the bottem, and everything else floats up. this can clog the fuel line, esp. if the car is Fuel Injected, it can cause problems.

but nothing that cant be fixed with some Fuel cleaner, fuel injector cleaner, fuel line doctor, etc.

pour a bottle of F/I cleaner, and run the engine for 15 minutes.

Gas will slowly degrade over time. It usually smells very strange when this happens. gas only has a life of about 6 months due to all the additives in it. Diesel is more like an oil and can sit for much longer.

The gasoline going stale, is that its breaking down chemically. Meaning, it won't be as useful as fresh fuel.

stale is just a general term

when gas gets old it loses its octane properties

it becomes less flammable and will start to get gummy and very bad for the tank and fuel system

it doesnt take 6 months usually, it can go bad alot sooner, and usually does

they sell bottles of fuel stabilizer

they work pretty good

good luck
