Actually St. Nicholas was an early saint of the Catholic Church but whoever made up the *idea* of Santa has my undying gratitude. Iv'e found that Santa comes to symbolise the great Good in Humankind, the ability to Give. I'm 44 years old and not ashamed in the least to say that I beleive in Santa and that I always will. Blessings.

Santa Clause wasn't the original. There was Saint Nicholas and so many version from other countries that were just old traditions. America took it, and of course commercialized it to be what it is today

Santa Clause is actually a real person that dates back hundreds of years ago. There really was a man named St. Nicolaus that passed out presents to needy and poor children. He would leave presents in their stockings at night (with the consent of their parents of course) and help out the people who really needed it. He was deemed a saint. Which can only be done years and years after your death by a church. Soon after he died his story became myth, his myth legend, and now its still carried out to make children believe in christmas. Hope this helped!

The answer would be the Germans and their neighbors. They "created" the character to honor the graciousness of Saint Nicholas of Myra. Check it out:

Dream makers of children. To give them something special to believe in. To give them hope. St. Nick originated in Germany. He has evolved into the modern day phenomenon.

Look at this.
There is more to this, than what is time lined here. Further research will reveal more.
