It's fine until i go to turn it off- it does nothing, just sits there, for ages. I have to click it at least 3 or four times. It just won't switch off

sounds like a program in the background cant be asked to turn itself off, could be a virus or adware, may even be messenger. Anyway just press the power button for about 10sec and it will turn it self off. If that does not work flick the switch on the wall. If that does not work you have a ghost in your computer get a vicar and let him pour holy water over it, only joking.

ok heres some good advice,.,

This is called windows OVERHANG its where explorer.exe trys to end its process before it has actually shutdown and therefore stops anything from processing you may get it sometimes when you boot up too you will get no start menu etc.. its due to memory page file issues and background processes you need to make sure you close any programs before you boot down make sure your paging file is no bigger than your real memory this is found in

CONTROL PANEL>SYSTEM>ADVANCED>VIRTUAL MEMORY On xp

Ok now make sure you have sorted that and try rebooting.... if not when it next overhangs press F11 this works for some reason. if not then you will have to restart your pc.

When you reboot hold f5 and choose last known good config and if everything fails again send it back to the manufacturer.

I suggest that you try to carryout system restore to a day previous to the day when there was no virus or any problems. It may be a few weeks or months back. You have to decide the date. Detailed instructions are posted at http://fixit.in/systemrestore.html
The problem is likely to be solved. Then,You insatll a standard antivirus soft ware such as Norton, AVG , Avast ( free antivirus software and Ad-aware, Ewido ( free spyware removers). You can download free softwares at
http://fixit.in/antivirus.html and http://fixit.in/spywareremover.html

If you are running Windows XP, chances are that your computer has received an automatic up-date and is installing it in the background. Fortunately, my monitor screen gives me a message that this is happening and the computer will turn itself off after the up-dates are completed. It will not hurt your computer just to leave it on for another hour or so. If you "pull the plug" or turn off the A.C. power to the computer, you risk damaging the files on your hard drive.

Hit the power button and just leave it. It might take a very long time but it will eventually shut down. If not, shut the power supply (surge protector) and then do a virus scan.

either your hard drive is full, your processor is fried or something wasn't installed properly on it.

mine does that too, and i know it's due to wrongly installed software.

if you press and hold the off button that should sort you out. i just leave my computer on all the time, and set just the hard drives to switch off after 15 minutes of inactivity.

It is waiting for a program to finish.
It could be a virus, or a bad bit of code.
Go to the Microsoft website, they did have a patch to cure it.
