I am curious because in science we learned about lake effect snow but not rain! How does it work?

Lake effect snow happens because during the summer, the lake water warms up; then, during the winter, it takes this warm water longer to cool down and freeze. As a result, there is a period of time where the weather is cold enough for snow, but the lake isn't yet frozen. As the winds blow over the lake towards the city, it picks up water from the lake and drops it as snow on the city.

Because the lake usually does freeze, the water is relatively colder in the spring and summer, and cold water evaporates less rapidly than warm water. So, the air picks up relatively less water from this cold water than it would if the water were warm, so the city is somewhat protected from lake effect "rain".

It is the ice that contributes to the lake effect, the wind and snow is cold and the lake is warm we get the snow


when the wind is cold and it is snowing but the
lake is frozen
we get the no lake effect..the snow passes by

water vapor is blown across warmer water onto/over a very cold land mass, the vapor freezes and precipitates as snow, for it to be rain, it would have condensate, and form droplets, if warmer moist air, blows over a warm land mass, many times nothing happens, it's when the extremely cold land, is crossed by warm water vapor that the effect takes place.

It has alot to do with the adjustments with the path of the winds. regularly, the summer season brings a southwesterly wind, no longer favorable for lake result climate occurrences
