http://www.lincolnsnewsalem.com gives a lot of good and interesting information about the six years Abraham Lincoln spent there. I went there when I was in the forth grade (24 years ago and I would like to go back there again.

This was a vital time period in Lincoln's life---3 to 5 should be no problem. This was a big step for Lincoln, to move to Springfield. There is so much information about Springfield and Lincoln it is unbelievable. Check out the website for the new Lincoln Presidential Library that is in Springfield for more info and trust me, this is not the worst topic ever!!
Talk about his relationship with his wife
His kids
His jobs as a lawyer, congressman, etc.
How his background made Springfield the perfect place for him to prime himself for the White House
Throw in the Lincoln-Douglas debates--they were important!
Good luck........check out the museum part too!!

I found a website very quickly which will get you started. I have been to his home twice in Springfield and also in New Salem where he lived for a few years. He practiced law in Springfield and then went on to run for political office. If you can't access the website I listed, simply type in Abraham Lincoln>Springfield ILL and you can get all kinds of websites on him and his life in Springfield. I have written 3 - 5 pages in less than 15 minutes, it should be a simply matter to write on our 16th President who educated himself by lantern light and went on to Abolish slavery and Emancipate the Slaves, only later to lose his life to a Southerner.

Perhaps you can talk about how his life in Springfield shaped him as President of the U.S.
