If its a 3.3l engine there was a problem with one of the head bolt washers making contact with a valve spring. They would come into the dealer as a lifter noise or valve train problem. At one time it was rated as the 5th most warranty request. They went with a wider washer to get more clamping area on the head.I can't say if thats your problem but be warned just in case.

Don't run out and buy a new car or a new engine just yet. I can't believe some of the absolutely stupid answers that show up here.I don't know what loud is , as related to what A '97 ain't that old, don't know how many miles on it. Does the tick occur at idle, does it speed up with engine, does it get louder at increased rpm, is the engine running and idling smooth ?? some comparison as to "loud" might help.

I would have to assume your van has lots of miles on it. If so, then it might be in need of an engine rebuild. Or on the next oil change can try a heavier weight oil. Will quiet it some, but the overall problem would still be there.

It sounds like a "Lifter Tap" I had this happen when i let my friend borrow my car for a week and well, she drove it without any oil. The only way to fix that is to take it in and have it repaired. It'll still drive even though it makes that noise. you just might get everyone you pass lookin at you cause your car sounds like its about to fall apart :)

it means there is play between the push rod and the rocker arm. you can have that adjusted by a professional. of course that is best case scenario. the Chrysler isnt known for it longevity, it may be time to start looking for another vehicle. one other thing. STP makes an oil treatment that is really really thick, like gear oil. it comes in a small blue bottle. put some of that in there, it may help make it more quiet.

sounds like the lifters are about to collapse try using 5w-30 see if that quiets down the motor. if not you might need to purchased a reman engine or you might look into getting a new vehicle soon. another way to tell is. is your exhaust smokin like a train if it is that not good you need a new engine.

I have a body shop so I know a lot about cars . It sounds like the motor in just about gone. There is not much you can do but look for a good used moter.
