I am a lucid dreamer and the best I can do is to say avoid drinking. I notice that on nights that I have a few drinks that my dreams are not as vivid or I do not dream at all. Alcohol will sedate you into the first stage of sleep but it will interrupt REM or dream sleep. Also, I dream the best if I am really tired going to sleep. I even was fortunate once to dream of looking at myself sleeping, but being a lucid dreamer has its downs too. I used to get up really early to take a vanpool to my college. I would get to the school at 6:15 AM and my lecture hall was usually open by then. I used to sleep in the theater style-chair and would resume REM sleep. I would also be subject to waking up a lot because of people coming into the building enterance which was right outside the class. When that happens during a really lucid dream, you are subject to sleep paralysis. You are half asleep but aware that you are not really asleep but there is not much you can do about it. The closest approximation I can fathom is is you have ever awoken from anesthesia. Lucid dreams can be scary as they seem real. I have had dreams where I knew I was dreaming but could control my settings in a god-like manner. I could blink my eyes and it would happen. I could will myself to fly and it happened. In that same night, I literally had a dream that I was dreaming. These are among the more pleasant ones. When you are convinced you killed someone and are on death row, the dream isn't nearly as fun as it assumes full reality to you as a lucid dreamer. Be careful what you wish for.

yes. everyday when you wake up, set aside a few minutes to really try your hardest to remember and write down every detail of your dreams that you can. By doing this everyday you are "exercising" the part of you brain where your dreams are created. It will become easier for you to be more aware while in the dream state and play a more active role in your dreams.

I have heard that it is being totally aware in you're dream, as if being awake, and being able to do whatever you want in you're dream state.

So, it is very important to begin to learn how to gain awareness while you are dreaming. That is the place to start.

There are clues within you're dream, that it is a dream. Most people may skip right past them, or don't think about things like that, so that is why they don't gain the knowledge. They don't seek it.

Tell yourself in you're dreams, to look at you're hands. That is the reference point to you're non-physical body.

Give yourself that suggestion before you fall asleep. It is not complicated. Just reason with yourself on it.
