In baseball the best player would pretty much be the one with the most homers in basketball the most points, but in hockey what do u consider to be the best player( the one with the most goals or the most points)

Shutting down the other team is as valuable or even more than scoring. There are a lot of guys who can score goals but the coach won't play them. They figure the guy is a liability because he won't back-check or that he doesn't deserve the ice-time when other guys are working hard but he is a floater ( like Gretzky). If he wasn't surrounded by other star players he would have been a horrible liability.

I disagree with the premise of your question I dont think most HRs means you are the best baseball player nor do I think a tons of goals or assists means you are the best hockey player. I would take into account all aspects. G A, +/- when the goals come (if you score 3 goals in a 7-3 win or loss big deal it is a lobsided game lets see how you do in the clutch). If I had to choose I would say most goals because you can get assists if you have great talent around you.

I would consider the best player the one that has the most points. Because not only are they scoring goals but they are also helping the others score goals with good passes and such. So you know they are not all about themselves but are getting their teams involved.

You can look at stats all day, Yeah you'll find out who made the most saves, or goals. etc.. To me the best player is the one you can't take your eye's off when he hit's the ice. Take Radulov for instance he has 6 goals, and some assists in 11 NHL games. yet when you watch him play it's amazing he is always in the right spot at the right time. Steve Sullivan his speed, All players have something that got them to the nhl .There is just too many factors to look at to say this guy is the best.

Primarily it is goals (50 being the magic number for a season) but statistically speaking it is the points total that matters (goals + assists)

to me is the best player needs to perform in the playoffs. like Patrick Roy, Martin Brodeur, Ken Dryden these are the best of the best when it comes down to it most when you needed a win they where the key players that you needed. there are many other ways to determine a best player in the NHL, a player must be able to dominate year in and year out not just for the one season but over a course of his career. to me the best player in the NHL, will go to the very next level of playing when it matters most yes the playoff.

A player who has the combination of most points, most goals, and least penalty minutes would do it for me.

The big thing is Points, although there is an award for Goals now as well.

Most points, as assists are important too. They're feeding the puck to the player who scores.
