The Cingular GoPhone Pay As You Go plans are decent for low usage. I tend to like the phones they offer better than T-Mobile, but their rates aren't as good unless you're planning on making a lot of mobile-to-mobile calls, in which case the $0.10/min plan is good ($1 daily surcharge when you use the phone).

T-Mobile prepaid rates run as low as $0.10/min if you buy a $100 refill. Both of these providers allow you to rollover minutes when you buy a refill. In my opinion, TMO prepaid is very competitive with any postpaid plan.

While features like free nights and weekends tilt in favor of postpaid plans, one thing I like a great deal about prepaid is that the per-minute charge includes everything. If on the other hand, I buy a postpaid plan that is $40/month, I can pretty much expect to be socked with another $10 in surcharges and taxes.

It is not 40 dollars for 30 minutes. Cingular GoPhone offers either "monthly plans" that mimic regular cell phone plans or pay by the minute plans. What you'd need would be based on your usage. GoPhone has all the available features like text messaging, downloadables, calling features, free nationwide long distance etc. And because GoPhone is a Cingular service, they utilize the same network. The phones are also pretty up to date and new.

If you only need the phone for emergencies, or aren't planning on talking on your phone alot, then it is a good idea to get one because the rates for minutes are expensive. They are better if you don't plan on using 500 minutes a month like certain phone companies offer.
