my computer was just recently hit with a virus of somekind and when it hit, i noticed that i couldn't be able to see my desktop items or my start bar at start up. When i start up it will show my start bar but not my desktop items. Give it about 2 seconds and this Error comes up saying "Explorer Error: This has preformed a illegal opp. and will be term". So i hit "x" but then my screen is nothing but my background. What can i do? The Virus and Worms have been cleaned out and everything is good except this. I DON'T have my install disk that origionaly come witht he computer. Miss placed somehow.

explorer.exe they edited your start up shell...

If you really want my honest oppinion... I would say to format your computer and start again. Talk with your local computer wiz kid or talk a computer repair man, about what options you should take at this point, and if they have any windows 98 repair disks that will fix the above file... (also tell them to check your regedit to see if they upon startup are refering you to an edited explorer.exe)
But more then likely they will give you much the same advise, to reformat your computer and maybe even upgrade your OS.

With technology advancing at the rate it is, you might even be best off buying a whole new computer.

good luck, hope my advice helps

Sounds like the infection either took something with it when you killed it and/or they screwed something up very badly before you got to it. You may have to find that install disk or if your pc can handle it update grade to a newer operating system. You may need to do a total reformat and start over. Sorry. I've been there and done that.
