Great question! I'm kind of embarrassed how my dog was named. I was working at a backpackers hostel and met this guy called Sam who lived in Canada. Then I went to visit him over there, came home, and kinda missed him, so got a dog and named him that. But I was also searching for names on the internet and I saw pictures of the type of dog I was getting (Cavalier King Charles Spaniel) and the caption under it said, "I am Sam" which I thought was super cute. So now I have Sam, Little Sammy, Mr Sammy, Sam Sam, Sambo, or whatever I feel like calling him on the day!

Three different stories:
My current dog, a Lab/Pit mix, is named Clancy. I found him at 11:30 PM the night before St. Patrick's Day running stray in the streets. He was small enough to fit in my cupped hands. He probably would have been road kill had I not found him. I figure, being 1/2-hour away from St. Patty's Day, he musta had the Luck of The Irish, so I gave him an Irish-sounding name: Clancy.
My best dog, who died 2 years ago, was named Odus. He got that name based upon the Otis character Ned Beatty played in SUPERMAN. He was loyal, clumsy, enthusiastic, and I love Lex Luthor (Hackman) so I made him my henchman, and named him Odus.
I also had a terrier named Bud-D, and together I called the three of them my "Operatives." Their secret agent ID's were "Minus-2", "Null," and "Double-0-Zero."
Many years ago I had a cat, who went nameless for his first month of life. Finally one day, I was looking at his face, and I noticed he had thick eyebrows. I said to him, "You have eyebrows like Dr. McCoy. Dammit, Jim!"
And he responded with his first meow which sounded like "McEye!"
From then on, he was "Dammit, Jim!" And he knew his name!
I also had a cat named Frank Wilson. He was in sales.

I intended on naming my white fuzzy dog Barkley after the dog on Sesame Street. My youngest daughter was just 2 at the time and could not pronounce Barkley...so she called him Broccoli. It stuck...we are the only people I know with a pet named after a veggie!

my current cats:
PLATO (female): I was 19 and I thought it would be funny to have a pet with a terrible name. I found her on the street. She had 4 kittens:
POTATO (male): I love potatoes and he was shaped like one when he was born.
PICO (female): Pico de Gallo
ACE (male): named after Keifer Sutherlands character in Stand By Me.
KITTEN (female): I wasn't going to keep her so I never named her. She was just "the kitten"
They have a last name, it's Welles because their father was named P.B. Welles (P.B. stood for 'Piss Bag' because he peed on everything. Welles because he looked like Orson Welles)

My cat is named Lennox. Ever since he was a kitten(he is now 3), he would balance himself on his back hind legs and box with his two front paws. So cute! So he was named after the boxer Lennox Lewis. :)

Your annabelle sounds absolutely precious!
I named my dog Xena after Xena the Warrior Princess, of course =) The cat "told" us his name. We couldn't decide what to name him. A week after we got him, my husband looked at him and said "Theodore?" and the cat answered "mrow?" So that's how the cat got his name!
