In their early days, Journey was nothing like the Steve Perry-fronted band that would rise to fame in the late seventies and early eighties. The group was formed initially by Neal Schon and Gregg Rollie, both of whom came from Santana. Although Neal Schon was always the group's guitarist, Gregg Rollie was only on the band's first few albums, and he only served as lead vocalist on the first three albums (althought he would sing on the occasional Perry-era track in the later seventies.) 1977 was the year tht saw the release of the third Journey album, and the final one to feature Gregg Rollie as lead vocalist. Read on for my review of the Next album.

When the band Journey comes to mind, what comes to mind in a person's head is the band featuring frontman Steve Perry that shelled out numerous classic pop rock hits like Any Way You Want It, Don't Stop Believin', and Wheel In The Sky. But, many people, even fans of the band, overlook a major era of the band's career - their early days. Steve Perry was NOT their original singer, contrary to popular belief. Their earliest albums featured Gregg Rollie on lead vocals. Rollie and lead guitarist Neal Schon had formed Journey after departing Santana. It was in 1975 that the band released its first album, which was self-titled. How does it measure up?
The first thing that I need to state is that this sounds NOTHING like the material the band became well-known for playing in the late seventies and early eighties. The band doesn't waste any time on this album. There isn't one track on here that doesn't rock. Of A Lifetime, the opening track, sounds more like On Through The Night-era Def Leppard than Steve Perry-era Journey does - and that's a very good thing. This is gloomy, melodic hard rock at its best. In fact, many parts of this album even make the band seem like a classic metal group! The two instrumentals, Kohoutek and Topaz, are also excellent. For the most part, the entire album is instrumental, but these two tracks are the only two tracks that are FULLY instrumental. The second track, In The Morning Day, features some of the best organ usage I have ever heard in a rock song. And the excellence doesn't stop there. The band shells out nearly forty minutes worth of classic hard rock excellence. My only problem with the album is that it's mostly instrumental, and therefore you don't get to hear Rollie's vocals as often. But that doesn't mean it's a bad album by any means - it puts anything the band did with Steve Perry to shame.

I go with JOURNEY and oh man I cannot BELIEVE there are others who REMEMBER the ORIGINAL Journey they were the greatest! It's sad that Journey's career didn't go anywhere with their first three albums, because they a full of great tunes. While the progressive sound, and long jams isn't something that I'm big into, I really enjoy Journey's venture into those styles. Gregg Rollie, Neal Schon, Ross Valory, and Ansley Dunbar were great musicians. The instrumental skill that each peformer has is great. On the LP NEXT tracks like Spaceman, People, I Would Find You, Hustler, Nickel & Dime, and Karma are all great. It's to bad they didn't find more success with the first three albums, but I think with or without Steve Perry they would have eventually found success.

Well, U2's music has a lot to say politically, but Journey is all about love. I like them both. I think I might lean towards U2 but then I think of all those beautiful Journey songs and I'm torn.

U2 I love this band! SO much more than Journey! The music is better. The lyrics are more meaningful.

Journey is a band girls like because of all the syrupy obnoxious love ballads. The Journey lead singer sounds like a Chihauhau caught in a vice grip. Do not insult U2 by even comparing the two bands. It would be like comparing the Beatles to Air Supply. Please, educate yourself about music before asking these kinds of insipid questions.

Journey. U2 has gotten a little out of hand with their political views, and I don't like them, anymore. Also, there music has really started to slide since Achtung Baby.

I'd go with Journey. Long string of hits, fun band in concert & the ongoing question of whether Steve Perry will rejoin the band.

However, if Boston was included as a choice, I definitely have to go with them !
