It varies by state, you were smart to say where you live. Check out
http://www.ctc.ca.gov/credentials/teach.html

it is the California site for teacher credentials. It is the best place to start!

Art Education programs usually are four year programs in a University setting. You go to school for 3 1/2 years and student teach for the last semester. High School art teachers should have a strong background in studio art, painting, drawing, printmaking, and photograghy. Some art departments may include Graphic Design also.
If you wanted to get a bachelors degree in an art related field, you can then go to grad school for art education and be certified in about two years-but why do that if you know what you want from the beginning.

One thing that's really helpful is to find which universities in your area send their student teachers out to the school districts that you would want to teach in. Many student teachers are hired to fill positions in their buildings. That's a great way to get your foot in the door. The teaching field is pretty competitive.

Good luck. Teaching art is very rewarding :)

After your four years, I believe you need to get an education degree. But first, get a major of what you want to teach. Talk to your counselor for more info
