yo the real answer is never. ignore everyone else on here. decimals may come up in your life, but as long as you know what they are, youre fine. if you are ever put into a position where you needed to do a math problem like that for a job or at home, they have this crazy new invention called the calculator. the only reason people still teach that crap is because they are just bitter about having to memorize it themselves and force this garbage down kids throats. the same can be said about a lot of modern education. you cannot learn ANYTHING in a classroom that you cant learn via the internet. and this is coming from a teacher.

When I bought my house, I did it a lot.
Of course, I use here and there the calculator but not that often, though....
The most amazing thing, well, one of the most amazing thing in my life is that I have become fond of decimals.
I think if my Maths teacher would hear that, he dies of a heart attack! Honest!
Otherwise, some year ago, we change the money here and our currency has four decimals...
See?
It happens we need it!

All of the above answers are great, however, more than using the actual math skills you are learning right now, the real purpose of the exercise is to teach a logical thinking sequence.
Which, hopefully, you will use far more often than the math.

anything involving money:

How much should my pay check be?
How much tax will that owe?
If I have 4 dollars and stamps are 39 cents a piece, how many stamps can I afford?
How big a tip should I leave?

etc.

No matter how boring it is, it'll be useful somewhere down the line. Stick with it, kid.

Good luck

At work, I have cause to use the decimal system quite often. But, I do also use a calculator too. Much easier.

splitting a dinner tab or check with friends, budgeting my paycheck (divide into segments), hanging a picture in the center of a wall or centering a picture in a frame (although I tend to use fractions), tiling a floor (dividing the space by # of tiles and size to see what fits).....
