For me it has to be Kubrick. I like Spielberg and respect his work (Jaws, Schindler's list and Munich being my faves) but I hated War of the worlds. Kubrick would never have given a film such a cheesy ending or filled a film with so many plot holes.

HELLO! KUBRICK, come on that's like saying who is a better actor, the rock or Robert deniro. How can anyone think that A clockwork orange, Full metal jacket, The shining and Dr strangelove can even compare to the likes of Jurassic park, Hook and E.T. Granted Jaws and saving private Ryan are fantastic, But come on Better than A clockwork orange or 2001? I think not.

Honestly I like both of them. Each has his pluses.
I don`t think I would find a person in the world, who doesn`t know Steven Spielberg and who isn`t able to tell me names of at least few his movies. He is lovingly commercial, but he always uses the money in the right way. His last fim Munich was just Great.
On the other hand Stanley Kubrick is much more cult director and some people find his work boring. Sometimes they might know his name, but can`t assign any of his movies. And that`s a huge pitty, because he was one of the greatest directors of our age, as well as Steven is.

Spielberg if only for directing The Colour Purple when no one else would and doing such a fantastic job. I like Spielberg's enthusiasim in his PG films.
Kubrick is a bit too OCD for me to really enjoy his films (although I do love Full Metal Jacket). For instance I didn't understand the Shining until I read the book - I was scared sh**less but confused.

Oohhhhh - difficult!!!!!! I suppose I'd go for Kubrick, only because he hasn't done ..... well oh I don't know really. I am just really pissed off with Spielberg's new series - what is it - The New World or something - about the Pilgrims in America - so stale - so am feeling a bit anti-Spielberg at the mo - and am going to pick Kubrick. Though Munich was ABSOLUTELY brilliant.

You can't really compare the two because they make different kinds of movies. Both are brilliant in their own way. It's true,
Spielberg is more a blockbuster director, but who doesn't want to go to the cinema just for an awesome experience. He has also made some very serious movies but they also appeal to the broader public.
Kubrick on the other hand didn't really seem to care what Hollywood thought, if he wanted to tell a story his way he told it as he pleased. His movies are grittier and hard core than than Spielberg's and they are generaly more thought provoking but they can be pretty disturbing also. I saw Clockwork orange once and it was a brilliant movie, but I will never watch it again as it disturbed me too much.
I like both, because you can't watch mindless sfx the whole time and you also need a break from the more serious stuff. Both deserve their place in history as great directors.
(correct me if im wrong but to those people who say spielberg did starwars, George Lucas created starwars)

i would have to say they both make different kinds of movies and the way they feel is different too.
i was scared with jaws, jurassic park my son jumped a lot too, schindlers list is an amazing movie and all the rest are awesome movies.
and then you have a clockwork orange, full metal jacket, 2001 a space odyssey and all the rest that also are awesome movies.
i think its hard to compare... i love both directors, its too back stanley kubrick died.

clockwork orange is my all time favourite film, 2 completely different film makers/directors... both really good as i love starwars/jurassic park... thing is, spielberg seems to be in it a little bit for the money because of part 2's and 3's etc where as kubrick wasn't just for making good films therefore my answer is stan the man kubrick....has to be

Kubrick... his movies are art pieces, they evoke thought. He made his movies because he had a message to get out to the public, and to stretch their minds. That isnt true for most of Spielbergs films, and I dont think he has ever claimed to rival Stanley Kubrick. (not many can)

No doubt it was to be Stanley Kubrick. His movies are so twisted and thoughtful they really move you in his demented way. As Spielberg makes great movies, but only Schindler's list is moving.
