John Proctor won't for give himself for cheating on his wife and he doesn't want to confess it infront of the whole congregation/city becuase then his name would be blemished...he can't stand the thought of his sons growing up being the sons of a lecher or wizard...it is that which leads him to refusing to let the head judges post his 'confession'.

John Proctor is threatened by Abby accusing him/ his wife and agrees to "confess" if his wife is freed. He doesnt want his name to be hurt, but he doesnt feel that having to put a confession in writing with his name attached is any way to confess. He believes that god has heard him and will deal with it, its not the towns business to have to forgive him too.
