The answer "mark_grvr" gave is good. However, I would get him an engraved "ID" bracelet. Not an expensive one but one that will not change colors from the sweat/heat.
You could have any personal message you like on it. It is not heavy nor so flashy that it would be stolen. Each time he looks at it he would see a part of you.

A personalized calandar with pictures of the two of you for each month. You could mark off special days like your anniversary and birthdays, and even have a countdown if you know when he's coming home.

pre-paid phone cards, a video recording of you and anyone who means anything to him wishing him a merry Christmas. any day to day living necessities. anything useful. a cutesy boyfriend girlfriend type gift is the last thing he needs to have to carry around with all his other equipment.
