Generally speaking, people who voice the desire to kill themselves are actually crying for help, and threatening suicide is the only way of communicating a pain so terrible there aren't words that can describe it properly. If your friend hasn't already seen a doctor, you must encourage them to do this - suicidal thoughts are almost always a sign of clinical depression.

For your reassurance, people who tell others they want to kill themselves rarely go through with it, and if they do, it's not often a successful suicide attempt. People who are serious about killing themselves will not readily tell others because they don't want to be stopped. Your friend wants to be stopped.

Normally when some says they are going to kill themselves they are asking for help...Counseling may help, if this is a kid the parents need to know, so they can get help for them...

To be honest with you i would say "go right ahead asshole" because why the hell would you say something like that if you didnt want attention? i know these things can be serious, but i also know that a person who TELLS someone they want to kill themself, will not do it, they dont have the balls. Tell your friend to stop being so selfish and to change his life instead of feeling so sorry for him or her self.

ask the person why he wants to kill himself. listen to him and then ask what's holding him back and use that to persuade the person to seek professional help. you may want to inform his parents or loved ones and form a support group to encourage him to find a real solution to his problem instead of killing himself

tell someone, but hun if she really wanted to kill herself she wouldn't talk about it, she would just do it, trust me. but she is obviously crying out for help either way.

Lia,
Call his parents or call the police! It is really better to play it safe then sorry. (experienced)
