I am aware that a microchip can be placed in a pet for identification purposes, e.g. with name, address, phone, etc. But, I'm wondering if there's such a device available commercially (as is available for an auto) that can be activated if a pet (dog or cat) is lost (or stolen)?

From what I know of current GPS technology, that doesn't seem likely. The chips implanted in animals right now are basically passive, and powered by the reader.
A GPS receiver needs to have a fair amount of power, and a remote controlled device would need to be powered up continually to activate the GPS circuit. It would also need some sort of transmitter and either a network of receivers (such as a cell system) or a satellite to receive and report the location. It would need to be a rechargeable system. Also, the GPS receiver wouldn't work if the animal was under or inside a building as the GPS signals don't penetrate structures well. The antenna would be rather larger than most implanted chips too.
Maybe something will come in the future, but I just don't see it as feasible right now. If someone has developed a system such as this I'd like to see how it works.

NO. The chip does not even contain the owners info...just the number. The company of the chip then has to be called to get the info the chip was registered with.
All a chip gives you is indentification....if someone finds it and calls to get the information!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
The thing at PetSmart is a COLLAR thing that is pretty big. If the collar thing comes off...you are SOL. It is NOT an implanted thing!!!!!!! And who wants to pay almost $300 plus a monthly fee for a COLLAR??

people that are pushing breed specific legeslation or mandatory microchipping are saying that it will tell you exactly where the dog is @ every minute. I have never heard of it from either the vet or the trainer. The only one I have heard of from them is the regular microchipping that if a person had a reader will tell you the adress and phone number for the owner.

Yes, there is a GPS for dogs. Go to your local pet stores, PetCo, Petsmart, etc. It's a good idea to have a microchip in the dog as well.
