i would say the grand prix. even tough it is not techinacally a muscle car. (meaning mid sized car with a big car engine ) the sd catalina's and sd grand prix's ruled nhra and nascar in the early 60's during the super stock years. the cool thing about the lemans is it is kinda like a baby gto. you could easly drop a 455 in it since pontiac blocks are all the same (no big block or small block.) Pontiac also offered some great while less popular muscle cars. the GT-37 and Lemans sport. both could be had with any gto engine but at a cheaper price. (kinda like the plymouth roadrunner concept go fast for cheap) and the 70 magnum 400 a dealer special car based on the tempest. (similar to the grand spaulding mopars and tasca fords)

If you are talking straight out of the box, then obviously the '64 Gran Prix. The Gran Prix was the car that got the term "muscle car" started. Notice I did NOT say "pony car". Two different things. The LeMans was a base car. Took over when they dropped the Tempest name. Now if you are talking what can be done with the two, then the '72 LeMans. The '64 would have "heaven help you" drum brakes all around and the '72 would have disc brakes up front. And since there was no such thing as a Big Block Pontiac or Santa Clause, you can go wild with engine choices. Externally, the base 350 Pontiac engine in the '72 was the same as say a 421,428, or even 455 Pontiac engines. So find a Catalina or Bonneville the same year as the LeMans (generally speaking) and slap the tri-power off the 389 on it and go crazy! It all depends on the particular body style and how you want the car to be as to which one a person likes the best. I had a '71 LeMans that originally had the 350 Pontiac, and due to the previous owner not having a clue as to what an oil change was, I ended up with a 400 out of a Gran Prix of about the same year. An absolute BLAST to drive!

72 LeMans wasn't much of a muscle car. End of the era stuff by then. THe 64 was a real blast. I remember one of our neighbors got the first Grand Prix down in Baton Rouge in 63 or so and all the neighbors, (my parents included) came and stood around it looking at the vinyl top. Nobody had ever seen or heard of a vinyl top at the time and thought that it would never "catch on"!!! Boy were we all wrong. hahaha Couldn't hardly buy a car without a vinyl top a few years later and all through the 70's. That 64 is damned nice car. My first car was 67 Grand Prix convertible and loved it to death. The 72 Lemans though while possibly fast, was already in the years where everybody knew that the tuning was down and they were on the way out. Because of that I like the 64 better. Styling on the 72 Lemans was nice though.

I would go with the '64 GP ,simply because it has more class than the LeMans. Neither is a commonly seen car these days, but the GP would REALLY stand out and if it has the 389 engine you may be able to get a three dueces (tri-power ) intake manifold for it. How cool would that be?

better for what?
resale?
holding its value?
either one is a good sturdy car
neither can be a four door
Or the color: beige, or brown ( sore thumb colors)
to be valuable
I LOVED my Metallic Green 72 Lemans w/350 engine
just researched the Grand Prix- kinda boxy and heavy looking

If all things were basically equal, I'g go with the '64 Grand Prix, especially if it has the 389 tri-power option.

obviously the lemans much more stout and recognized car and war more dependable, i believe the efforts @ gm on the grand prix were overshadowed by making the GTO or its more popular name the Goat
