Eruptions from Mauna Loa are generally not explosive, so people aren't usually in danger. However, with bad luck, the lava can destroy communities.

They pretty much don't like them. But even more important, people near Mauna Loa (and to a lesser extent Mauna Kea) are affected in some pretty offbeat ways. ------For one thing, they have a tendency to fill their underwear with sand during the winter months, [scientists think this is because they are crazy as bedbugs]. Then, too, there's the custom of "balakla golim", which dates back almost to the time of Captain Cook (who was eaten by the Hawaiians remember) where the nearby villagers smear themselves from head to foot with bird guano and hold canoe races. These mountains do, indeed, have strange powers over people.
