How do you start an animal shelter/rescue?

What are some requirements needed to start an animal shelter/rescue in the state of Missouri? What options should be considered, and what options/ways are there to go about doing this? What are some steps needed to go about opening an animal shelter? Positive feedback and advice only please. Thank You~ Sierra

start by going to your state or local licensing dept.I am sure they can guide you with all the proper registrations and guides

Make sure you check with your insurance company to. You will need lots of insurance in case an animal attacks someone.

I would also incorporate your business. This way if a person sues you for some dumb reason an Incorperation or LLC will pervent someone from suing your personally, they will only be able to sue your shelter and your personal assets (car,house,personal bank accounts) will not be touched-

yea I have the same problem! I really want to start up a small shelter for small animals (like birds, bunnies, ferrets, rats, mice, sugar gliders, hedgehogs, some cats, ect) I really want to but I dont have the money or space! as soon as I get a job (witch is probably next month) im going to start saving, hoefully, by the time I move out I will beable to start up a rescue! I know one person at my school got together a few teachers, gr12 kids and some gr11 people and we now have a rescue run by are school. I would be apart of it but im not in the age group :D

And after you are incorporated, permitted, etc. introduce yourself and the shelter to local vets and pet stores. You may be able to secure a small but regular donation of needed services or supplies from both of these businesses.
