She was right..to some degree.

It's fine to sit them up like that at this age. The only way it would be harmful is if you did it too much.

You do what you feel is right for your son. Afterall, you know him better than that woman.

Your son sounds like mine. My son was 9 1/2 lbs when he was born and 21 1/2 inches. He came out holding his head up! He was a bruiser - and still is. I sat him up on my lap from probably a month old.

He was sitting up on his own at 4 1/2 months. If he's ready to start learning there is no harm. Besides, your supporting his neck and spinal column by propping up on your lap. And, if he has good head control you don't even have to worry about it.

Some older women are just meddlers, lol. :))

What she said makes sense, but I have a 3 month, 17 lb baby and have been sitting him up for several weeks now. He likes to look around and see what's going on. My 17 month old daughter started sitting up by herself around 4 or 5 months. I feel that sitting up your baby is ok as long as you support him. Of course, you should go ahead and ask your pediatrician. They will be able to tell you more facts about scientific part of the situation.

Ive never heard of that before, I mean I wouldnt sit him in a totally upright position but in a reclined upright position, for instance like he would sit in a baby swing, I always burped my son in an upright seated position, and if a child has reflux the docs suggest that they seated upright for a while after a body to prevent the reflux. As for the spinal cord thing, Ive never heard of that before ever. couldnt find anything about that on the net, and from my reading when I was pregnant and basic education in college the spinal cord is fully developed before birth.

The midwife sat my baby up when he was 1 day old. I was surprised but she said it was fine. Babies can sit supported at 4 months i think.. then they can support themselves by 6 months. I guess there is no harm in sitting your baby up, maybe just not for too long. If you think of it, car seats are shaped as if the baby is sitting.

My daughter was sitting up with my support at that age, The only thing that my docter ever said was wow she is strong for her age. She was also putting full support on her legs at that age. My daughter is now 5 months old and almost crawing... I dont think that it is going to harm him. But somebodys always got something to say when you have kids.

if your baby can support his own head then i dont see why not. my daughter is a quick developer and was holding her head up after 2 weeks and we started to sit her up on our laps at around 13 weeks as she is a very nosey baby.

when she was around 15 weeks she pulled herself up into a sitting position in her bouncer and now at 23 weeks can sit unaided.

for reassurance i would check with your doctor but i dont see no problems wit it. your baby will develop when he wants and if he like to be sat up then let him.

hope this helps x

My boy just started sitting by himself at about 5 1/2 months. I still have to watch him. They'll let you know when they are ready like everything else.

I think it's fine as long as you don't do it for expended periods of time. There is probably some truth to what she's saying, but every once in a while should be alright!
