It is probably a blow snake, they can range in color from brown to grey. Harmless to people but deadly to rodents like mice and gofers and insects of all kinds. You should still approach it with caution until you are sure what it is exactly.

Sounds like a Racer snake, they love bird nests.
If it has yellow , it is not a nice fellow.
Snakes are good to get rid of mice
