I prefer not to give cash because most of the time that money gets eaten up by bills and boring grown up stuff. If you give a gift voucher at the favourite store than they can get what they want and it shows that you know them because it was from their fav shop.
Teenagers especially love money because they can go to the movies etc with friends and buy what they want when they want.
Making a money tree or something similar also makes it fun. shows that you didn't just pop money into a card for them but that you actually went out of your way to make it interesting.

I think gifts are good if the people know you well enough to buy something you like, but I would rather my relatives give me money instead of a sweater I will never wear or some little knick knack that I would never use. At least I would use the money to get something I actually need.

You should appreciate whatever is given to you, rather you like it or not. Even if you receive money as a gift, just go buy something with it. It's the thought.

I prefer a gift since it shows more thought. But on the other hand my inlaws give me $100 for Christmas and my birthday because they know we don't have a lot of money to splurge on so that's a real treat for me.

There are some people for which money would be the most useful...I am gonna give a few people money...but for the most part I think I will give gifts.

I think something you went out and found for someone specifically, is more of a 'gift' - money in an envelope to me is what your boss gives you, or someone who can't be bothered to get to know you well enough to find something you'd like.
On the other hand, if your taste runs to pink flamingos or big flowers on the shirt, it's better to give money or a gift card, at least the person has a chance to enjoy it! (one of my friends consistently gives me things I wish she'd never found, her wedding gift to me and my husband was one of those stupid clocks that makes an artificial bird chirp on the hour. urk.)

If the recipient is in financial trouble, cash may be a thoughtful gift. Otherwise it suggests you are giving them a gift simply because you felt obliged, as you didn't take the time to show thought about their needs.

Money is a conveinent gift for both. However it shows that almost no thought went into it. If you want the recipient to have a memorable gift then buy one for them.

I really dislike giving money. I also dislike receiving money. I think it's impersonal. I am with you, I always give gifts they are more personal and then you really have to think about the person and what they like. People seem to appreciate it more.
