Hire a tree care company to hang the lights for you. Depending on accessibility they will either climb the tree using ropes and harnesses or use a bucket truck or other lift.

Many tree companies offer this type of service during the Holiday season.

I don't recommend climbing the tree yourself. I have been an arborist for almost 10 years and have seen advanced climbers injure themselves while taking all safety precautions.

Actually, you can use what is called a man lift and operate from the street. Rent one that has a 120ft boom. It has stabilizers called outriggers on the side that supports the equipment so it will not tip over when the boom is extended all the way out. They are easy to operate and very inexpensive to rent. Some rental companies will even give instruction in proper driving techniques. They can be operated in a very tight space. Call a rental company and explain your situation and they can have a salesman come to your home to scope the area and see if it will operate within your space. It should easily. Of course they deliver and pick up. Cost about 80 dollars per day.

Cut it down and roll the string of lights around it ... but when you put it back, one bulb in the middle will be a dud : )

I suppose you could try borrowing a remote-controlled plane, or guiding them to the top with a few helium balloons & a piece of string?

You could ask a linesman if he hires out & use the platform to drape the tree.

Fibre-optics lines, and a BB gun? Seriously, it's the boy-scout problem, isn't it? Throw a small stone over the top with a string or other fibre attached. When that catches on top, tie the lights onto the end & carefully pull the string until the lights reach the top. If you don't have a small stone, bribe a kid to climb up. Don't forget the string!

Parachute down ;-)
Try renting a cherry picker that will take you on up to the top. Other than that, get a really, really long strand of lights and a rock on one end. Then you can do like the Gauchos and throw it up to the top...then it should get stuck with any luck...then do it like a May Pole and wind around and around. Those're the only two ideas I have.

You have to climb the tree.
If your not comfortable with that then dont attempt it.
Or at least have a couple of beers,( NA of course) and then reconsider the climb.
Use strings that are big and brite. You wont be able to get them out to the very ends of the boughs. Yeah and use a good quality set as you will want to leave them up there year round.

First get a small spool to wrap your lights around, starting with the plug first wrap! then go the hardware store and buy some pvc pipe, you can buy 50 ft very cheaply and its lightweight and sturdy, maybe you can even get the same diameter as the hole in the middle of your spool. Then attach the spool with the lights to the pvc pole pipe, make sure to make a loop in the end of your lights because once you raise your pipe up you will need to lasso a branch atop the tree, from there its a breeze, just wrap around the tree and plug it up!
