It truly is a sickness....maybe fixable with a lot of therapy. It says a lot about a person's outlook on life.

I must admit to being the Master of Messy. I have always been a slob. Maybe it's because, when I was a kid, my stepfather used to punish me, and beat me up, while making me do housework chores, usually at 2 in the morning on a school night.
Also, after I would get home from work, all I saw was my bed and TV waiting for me. If there was a mess, it went "in one eye and out the other."
I swear that there are times when I'll be doing some cleaning, I'm sure I've covered the area properly, but when I turn around somehow there's still a bunch of stuff right where I just cleaned!

I'm that way right now. And I'm REEAAAAAAAALLY depressed. Family members who are judgemental don't need to come over, they've added to my misery. It's a reflection of how it feels inside, and somewhere I simply gave up.
It was funny in the movie When Harry Meets Sally. but it isn't fun to live.
I'd say do something to give this person hope and joy and keep your mouth shut about the home. Until you build any sense of trust or relationship (those are what's important).
I had a dad who broke my arm because I didn't clean sufficiently as a kid. In college I cleaned houses for others, and I've kept house for slobby roommates, too.
My mess is about 3 years old and stems from many things, all of them <>--and flippant family members who make it worse.

Sometimes people just can't get organized. Pack rats! They think they need to keep everything, generally due to a childhood which they had nothing. But sometimes its as simple as just needing someone to organize things and then they can keep it that way. There are 100's of reasons why people don't clean and let things get so bad, but organization skills, is like a top one.

Its many reasons, she might be depressed or she might just be lazy. My ma's friend kept her house extremely junky so we sent her on the Maury show for a house makeover...since then she kept her house up. Maybe u should try emailing the Montell show, the Maury show, the Oprah show and the Tyra Banks show so u can try and get her on there

They probably feel overwhelmed by it all and don't know how to start. You may suggest www.flylady.net.
They could also be depressed and not have a lot of motivation for cleaning up. Sometimes when the mess is so big it can be overwhelming. Imagine how you'd feel if you had to clean their house the way it is now. They probably don't know where to start.

This person is nasty and dirty. He or She is ashamed of how they live that's why no one is invited over. The reason why they want to live like this has to be a mental issue.

TO KEEP YOU AWAY, ALONG WITH EVERYONE ELSE. THEY HAVE ISSUES AND THIS IS HOW THEY DEAL WITH IT. FREQUENLY ITS BECAUSE THEY WERE SLIGHTED OR OFFENDED BY SOMETHING WITHOUT THE SITUATION BEING RESOLVED. MANY TIMES IT IS A SITUATION THAT HAS CARRIED ON FOR LONG PERIODS OF TIME AND THIS GIVES THEM THE SPACE THEY NEED, ALL THE OTHER FAMILY MEMBERS ABUSED THEIR POSSESSIONS AND FOR YEARS THEY THOUGHT TO THEMSELVES...... ONE OF THESE DAYS.
GOD BLESS
