Because no president before FDR had served more than two terms. FDR served three and was elected for a fourth. Many in Congress, and many people in general, thought a president who served that long would usurp power. Thus the 22nd Amendment was passed.

To further prevent the possibilty of a tyrant taking over. Power gets to people's head and they need to be told when they have to stop. There has been the exception of FDR during WW II where he had served 3 terms and was on his 4th I do believe. Other than that, I can't think of any presidents that served more than 2 terms prior to this amendment.

It was in reaction to Franklin D. Roosevelt's 4 terms.
The 22nd Amendment to our Constitution stipulates that no person can hold this highest office for more than two full terms. And once held for those two terms, he or she cannot ever hold the office again.
The reason is simple: we shouldn't allow any one person to hold power for long because power corrupts. Washington made the point when he stepped down as president after two terms. Thomas Jefferson continued Washington's limit of two terms and the tradition lasted until FDR.

Because FDR served 4 terms in a row (he died before he finished his last term) and although it wasn't put into the Constitution at the time George Washington had set the standard for US presidents when he only served two terms.

This was passed under Eisenhower in response to the 4 terms FDR was elected to. Eisenhower also was very popular and could probably have served more than 2 terms.
