It is possible to set up a model on a computer to show how healthy, beneficial, toxic, etc. a product is. However, this can only be achieved AFTER getting the results from other tests done on animals. Also, the computer model is somewhat limited, there are certain variables it just can't predict.

Personally, I think they should use convicts.

Animal testing could be done to check whether something is toxic or whether it “works”, e.g. cures a particular illness. Analytical chemistry could be used to identify known hazards in complex mixtures, and their generation could be monitored by mixing a substance of interest with known enzymes from a human body (some substances are made toxic after they are oxidized in the liver). Some information about toxicity could be obtained from experiments on cultured cells. Also, there is a constant search for invertebrate model organisms, which are considered less problematic test subjects from some ethical viewpoints. Such alternatives could help to identify some, but not all problems. For example, concentrated sulfuric acid will kill cultured cells and worms, but some substances that perturb mammalian development will not; some conditions, like amnesia, are not readily modeled in cultured cells. Therefore, testing in mammals is essential. Unfortunately, there are some differences between humans and, say, mice, which could make substances toxic to us appearing less toxic to mice. Therefore, after a substance has been tried in animals, final testing is always done on humans under carefully controlled circumstances before a substance is approved for clinical use.
