Sorry - no photo. My neighbor hacked it to bits thinking it was a scorpion. It was not.
The bug looked like a flesh colored overgrown cricket about 2 1/2" long. It was actually fleshy, not scaly. The head was 1/2" long and about 3/8" thick. At the top center of its body, on the top, was a bumblebee shaped and striped part about 1" long. Could not see if it had a stinger. Again, no scales, very smooth except for the bumblebee part. Didn't seem to be able to fly, just crawl. It was freaky.

You may be referring to a Jerusalem cricket, more commonly known as a potato bug. These insects aren't really crickets and don't eat potatoes, but who says names have to make sense?

Next time, give us a general idea of where you live. It'll help narrow down the possibilities of what you're looking at.

I think you've got yourself a potato bug, also known as a Jerusalem cricket. Harmless, although they'll bite if messed around with. I've seen them a time or two. I fail to see how your neighbor could mistake one for a scorpion, but, well, it wasn't. Here's a link to a lots of pictures:
