Why is it that when I use a regular pencil, there is no sound, but when I write with a mechanical pencil, there is a little squeaky sound. It frustrates me when I'm taking tests because it's distracting, and it makes me think why do they squeak, and I can't focus on my work.

Yes, Papermates are good!

Anyway, the reason they squeak can easily be found in looking at the two's tips. Think about a fingernail scratching a chalk board, and about a baseball being rubbed down a chalk board. Which would be more irritating? The lead pencil's main attraction is also its downfall. The ever-sharp point on it causes the lead to scratch against the paper as well as write on it, which causes that screech. Regular pencils are cone shaped and don't have a perimeter about them.

Lead: |_|
Regular: V

The regular forces you to use the sides, and the middle wears down to a nice rounded point after a very small amount of time. The lead's point wears away faster than the sides do, so you can't wear them down.

If you can't stand the scritchy scratchy sound, try giving the pencil a good rubbing down on scratch paper, the margin of your paper, or even your jeans. Never do tests with a fresh piece of lead; try to do these with traditional pencils instead.

The pencils squeak because of the angle and pressure on the lead, the surface you are writing on, the quality of the pencil and then intensity of the writer. Try- adjusting the lead to a shorter/longer length -try writing with another paper under the assignment. -change pencils.
