Actually, you get 2 points. I guess it's just part of how this works and to tell how active you are at answering. And you need points to gain ranks.

Well... that's how it's set up. It costs you points to ask a question. If you never answer any questions then you will eventually run out of points and won't be able to ask any more. After getting a certain number of points you are also allowed to vote on best answers to some questions. Other questions the asker picks the answer they like best.
