UW is an amazing school. I studied English and dance there, and UW students are experts at balancing schoolwork and the necessary healthy dose of partying. I had great professors. The sports are amazing. The Capitol farmers' market and the cheese and the bars are amazing. The campus is very friendly and welcoming to all races and sexual orientations, and drinking beer on the Union Terrace while looking out over the lake, maybe reading a book, then watching a band, is possibly the best pastime ever.

Then, for some foolish reason, I graduated and moved to Minnesota. But I give it a good two years before I'll be back in Madison 'cause I love that place.

My husband attended UW almost 10 years ago. Madison is different than the rest of Wisconsin- more diverse. Don't think it is like Milwaukee like the answerer below infers. The academics at UW are strong. My husband liked it there so much that he wants us to move back to Madison some day.

One of the very best things about Wisconsin is their residential UK campus near Edinburgh, Scotland, at which you may get to spend a semester. It is a huge Queen Anne country house in which I previously worked for 12 years, loved it, and still live only half a mile from. I was delighted when UW leased it and brought it to life again.

Which one? I have heard from a few friends of mine that academic life at UW is great. Great professors, nice classrooms, etc. Plus you are in the great state of Wisconsin! Socially, again you are in Wisconsin, home of Milwaukee.
