how do you turn on the ignition switch for the automatic pilot on a gas heat pump?

Do you mean a gas furnace? It should be a spark ignition or a hot surface ignition. You shouldn't try lighting either one manually.
Never heard of a gas heat pump.

it should already be wired and ready to go! it is controlled by the thermostat....if u ran out of gas and u r trying to get the unit going again or starting up for the season, u should be able to just turn the thermostat to heat.....run the temp up to about 80 and let it run, it might take about 5 mins for the unit to start up and the ignition switch to work ....one it does it will work every time....
