Native Americans used tobacco for ceremonies, and chewed and smoked it before Europeans discovered the Americas. John Rolfe is the European credited with being the first to succesfully raise and harvest tobacco in 1609 in Virginia. Smoking, snorting and chewing tobacco gives people a "high" and increases blood pressure and heart rate. Some people claim it causes them to be more alert. Check out the link for the info.

People have been smoking for a LONG time. According to Wikipedia, "the practice was common among Native Americans of The Plains Indian religion, and was later introduced to the rest of the world by sailors following European exploration of the Americas."

"[Smoking] is depicted in early Mayan art dating back to around 1,500 years ago. The Maya were also known to use tobacco as an all-purpose medicinal antidote, and the crop was widely believed to possess magical powers as its usage has been documented in ancient ceremonial sacrifices and divinations as well as in talismans."

Same as dumb teenagers do nowadays - celebrities with teeny brains smoke so teen wannabe's start smoking to like their icons. Then they get addicted. Sometimes I think the natives got the pilgrims smoking as a joke - in order to kill them off
