nOOb question here: I'm thinking of getting Xbox 360 Gears of War as a gift for someone who is getting an Xbox 360 Holiday bundle that includes Ghost Recon. Is Gears of War different enough from Ghost Recon to warrant buying it?

Both games offer something different, and may share similarities, but are completely different from each other. Ghost Recon is more authentic and uses real weapons(some in development) enemies, vehicles, and armor. While Gears of War uses fictional weapons, enemies, vehicles, armor, etc...
Think of the difference between the movies Black Hawk Down and "some futuristic war movie"(I couldn't think of one). Maybe like the future war scenes in the Terminator movies.
Both games revolve around cover, but use an enirely different cover mechanic. I strongly suggest getting both, I have played them, and at no point did I think "I have played this game before."

Gears of war is very different from Ghost Recon. Gears of war has a mixture of action and tactical game play elements (you have to take cover alot, but cannot be afraid to push forward in flanking attempts) and emphasis es visceral, gory gun fights. Ghost Recon is a very tactical game (die in a few shots, getting head shots at distance, etc.) Gears has a very fictional storyline on an non-earth planet fighting what are essentially mole men, while Ghost Recon's storyline takes place in Mexico in 2014. Gears of War is a very unique game play experience, and is a must have game if you own an Xbox 360. I would even recommend buying a 360 just to play Gears of War. I seriously recommend purchasing Gears of War as a gift for the person who bought a Xbox 360, but make sure they haven't bought it already!

umm that is a hard choice beause both games are very good and i habe ghost recon but i have played Gears of War. To me gears of war is better but if u want to get gears of war first then buy ghost recon used for cheaper or new. But both games are very good both have good gameplay and u wont get bored escpecially with xbox live. I hope this helps in you decision.

No they are way different. Gears is more of a futuristic (sp?) game than Ghost Recon. Plus you get to Chainsaw people in Gears, which is awesome. I doubt you can do that in Ghost Recon

No, Ghost Recpn is more Military Gears of War you fight more monsters and things like that

g.r.a.w. is more realistic while gears of war is sci fi,the use of cover is greatly emphasized in both but it feels real in g.r.a.w i suggets getting both especially ghost recoc if u have x box live it'll blow ur mind the first time u play it online,its also pretty fun to rip into a locust's chest with the chainsaw bayounett on gears of war
