my friend recently asked me if i thought she was racist, and i couldnt decide. heres the story, tell me what you think.

according to my friend, everytime she sees an african american person, she is NOT MEAN but EXTREMELY NICE and overwhelmingly friendly to them. if she bumps into a white person, shell just be like, sorry. but if she bumps into a black person, she makes a big deal with, OH EXCUSE ME, IM TERRIBLY SORRY, DIDNT SEE YOU THERE!!! :)

she told me that she feels almost like she has to overcompensate for african americans, bc she feels like if she doesnt exaggerate her friendliness, they will think she hates black people.. or smthng like that

so does that consider her a racist?

It sounds like she is so afraid of being labeled a racist that she is way overcompensating. People are in general way to sensitive about things and if someone is rude to someone else the first thing that they assume is that it is due to race, and a lot of people use the race card all to often leaving many people scared of being labeled as racist even if they really are not.
Racism is more than just treating people differently because of their race, as many people seem to be confusing. It is about treating someone as less because of it. Treating people differently is not racism.

lol i feel the same way, its not racist because people would often see that if your not extreamly polite to black people your a racist, but then you go and beat the crap out of a white dude and you dont feel nothing, in my mind id say you can treat them just like your normal friends, but due to all these emos now a days everything seems racist or mean

It is over-compensating. The African-American probably recognizes this and may see it as phony and insincere. Tell your friend to just e herself. If she bumps into someone, who cares what color they are? A sincere apology should be the same regardless of a persons color.

In a sense, I guess it is kind of racism. But I wouldn't tell her that if I were you. The poor girl sounds like she's beating herself up over it. Tell her just to relax. We're all people. If we were all blind would it matter? No ones going to accuse her of hate just because she didn't apologize for bumping into them. Most everyone is kinda rude nowadays...white, african amer., asian, hispanic...doesn't matter.

It is racism and she has a problem. She is blaming herself for the sins of her ancestors and she shouldn't do that. Treating races differently regardless of any reason is prejudice and racist. Tell her to treat blacks and whites the same way, not better or worse.

I wouldn't say she is racist, but I would say she has a weird way of thinking. Something is up with that. She needs to realize that you should treat all people the same way.

no. she just feels guilt she shouldn't be feeling. she should feel sympathy for blacks who've had to endure racism, but she shouldn't feel responsible for what has gone on in the past; she should only feel responsible if she has personally done racist things.
