It is official yes you can use ps2 and ps1 and all the latest DVD formats
But European consoles wont be able to use ps2 memory cards game saves on a ps3 but there is a way to transfer, also u will not be able to use your old duleshock 2 controllers as announced by Sony

Yes and No. There are about 200 PSX/PS2 games that will not work on the PS3, and about 8000 more that may not work accordingly on the PS3, but those should be fixed via firmware.

Yes, you can. One of the main, and best features of the PS3 is that it is COMPLETELY backwards compatible with both the PS2 and PS1 when it comes to games. Old controllers and such will not work, but every single game will.
