I'm going to put this very simple: It's not that the HORSE can't change leads...it's just you aren't communicating to him correctly. You can bet your bottom dollar your horse is capable of changing leads, they do it all the time in the pasture when they're running free! The only problem is COMMUNICATION.
Don't sell the horse if you love him so much. The horse CAN change leads. Call a professional trainer to help you with your body language when asking for the lead change, and training him to respond. This is such a minor problem, and it would not be worth selling him over.
Also - did you say he just can't do barrels? In case you didn't know, it takes 2-3 years to fully train a horse to barrel race, so if you're willing to dedicate yourself to training him on barrels, go for it! I highly suggesting hiring a trainer or instructor specializing in barrels to help you. Don't sell your horse and get a horse that knows how to barrel race...because over time if YOU dont know how to barrel race, that horse will lose his touch. It only takes the slightest change for the worse, such as body position, to ruin a barrel horse.
I hope I didn't sound harsh! Sorry i have a problem with using caps.. =o) good luck, barrel racing is such a rewarding and amazing discipine, you won't regret getting into it!

Some horses just don't have what it takes to be a barrel racer.Have a professional evaluate him, he may just need some agility exercises or maybe he would rather be a jumper or pleasure/trail horse or dressage.Don't give up on him I think you just need to find his "expertise".
Best of Luck and Happy Trails : )

Don't sell him just because he can't be a barrel horse! Thats like selling a dog if he won't sit.

DON'T sell him. You obviously have a good bond so why break it. So what if he can't barrel race yet. Juz give it time, take it slowly, pateiently and teach him and if he still doesn't barrel race well, who cares coz he's special 2 u.

No you should not sell him! Just because YOU have not taught him to do flying changes does not justify selling HIM! You should get with a trainer and workon your horsemanship and make it a goal to learn flying changes yourself then how to teach your horse to do them. Then you can start working on barrle racing. If your horse is just not fast enough to compete with the other barrle hoses and you are passionate about it, then you should look into buying a barrle horse.

Well don't sell him then. Work with him, it might take time, be patient and you'll be right in the end.
