umm i was just wondering can i like buy a unlocked phone on ebay ,and put the sim card i had in the new phone and i can now use that phone? i dont quite get it

Yes you can as long as your carrier is a GSM carrier (TMobile, Cingular, etc). This will not work if you have Sprint or Verizon, they use a different proprietary technology.

If you do have a GSM carrier, as soon as you pop in your SIM card the new phone will be your number and any contacts that you stored in the SIM will be there too! You never need to call and activate an unlocked GSM phone.

you can unlock the phone you have now. Usually the actual companies won't do it (tmobile, cingular, etc) but cell phones shops at the mall charge about $30-40 to unclock phones. There is a special program in order to do it. I had a good tmobile phone and I switched to cingular. I had to get my phone unlocked in order to put the cingular sim card into it. The programs like AIM, or ringtones programs may not work tho.

Yup if its a GSM SIM Card, and you better make sure your phone isn't on the stolen list because if it is and you go to get it fixed you can be arrested.
