I have just gotten DSL and have had a router for about 5 years. Of course an ethernet cable came with the DSL modem, but also there is one for the router (DI-514). I am so confused about setting this up, or not setting it up. Is the reason because there are two ethernet cables and just one plug on the DSL modem? Help me - I'm tearing out my cat's hair - lol.

It's easy.

Run one ethernet cable from the DSL to the WAN port on the router.

Run one cable from one of the 4 ports on the router to the PC.

You can either then run another cable from other 4 ports on the router to the laptop or you can set up the wireless. (if your laptop supports it)

Then, just read the manual for the router on how to configure it.

well you plus a ethernet cable from the modem into the the input port on the router. then you'll need to plug another ethernet cable into your pc so it relays the info. HOWEVER alot of DSL services use PPP transport in which case the you need to clone your IP from your PC into the router. unless its the first time setting up the DSL. MAC address forwarding gets tricky you may want to call 1800geeksquad to get step by step help with it

setup is as follows...one ethernet cable from your dsl modem to the WAN input of your router. The router should have 4 out going ports., These ports go to the NIC card on each computer with ethernet cable. This assumes both computers have NIC card in them, and you have 2 more ethernet cables to go from the router to each computer. If the router is also wireless, then you can use usb antennas on each computer. see the networking faq and forum on dslreports.com

mine goes from the phone line, to the dsl modem to the router. It's a wireless router for my laptop, but the desktop is connected to the router via an ethernet caable. It sounds like a simple enough problem to solve, although i have limited experience. good luck. hope you get a straight answer...
