I drive a 2000 Mazda Millenia 2.5 and it is making a grinding noise near the timing belt or water pump. I believe that it is the bearings in the water pump but I'm not sure. What is this and how much is this going to cost?

it is possible that the water pump is going out. it could also be the idler pulley bearing. i would get it fixed soon. if the timing belt breaks you will have to get a new motor or at least allot of head, valve, and piston work. the Mazda 2.5 KL motor is an interference motor. the valves will hit the pistons. depending on your area you are looking at 400 to 800 dollars.

Check prices for a water pump and labor. If the seals go out, the water pump will start to leak. You'd be money ahead to have a mechanic diagnose the problem.

sounds like it could be a number of things but if its in the timing belt area i would recommend you get it looked at soon. it could be the tensioner pulley for the timing belt and that would cause it to break. it could just be the water pump. dont guess and get it looked at soon..... for your pocket books sake

it might be the water pump,or the bearing in the alternator.
