America, the melting pot. not the first melting pot, nor the last. english people are genetic descendants of many races, and yet now we consider them to be a race. every race out there is like that, a grouping and regrouping of different races. we see this evinced by the languages produced when two cultures unite. now then, can we please stop saying i'm (whatever)-american and just say I'm American? this goes for white folks too... you're not "AN" American, just like the boy from beijing is not "A" Chinese. get the verbage right and we may be able to break out of this racism. i also think we should remove the "what's your ethnic heritage" question from the census and everything else. most of you do not hail from the countries that you claim as your heritage, so you are not technically anything but american. thoughts?

i feel that by focusing on a distant past and heritage we lose the togetherness we should feel here in america. i am not saying conform to anything. certainly not "white america." i can almost guarantee that you do not hold onto any traditions from africa, nor have you been there, and yet you are african? i am french and scottish and blah blahblah... i have never been to those countries and the closest thing to the language i can produce is a few phrases here and there and a convincing Sean Connery impression. ethnic pride is the root of racism. to be proud to be one race means that you are happy you aren't a different race. otherwise you wouldn't be proud. so yes, dropping our supposed ethnicities is one way, i feel if not THE way, to ending racism.

I don't see why people believe the only way to overcome racism is to give up your race. That usually means that everyone should conform to the white-American culture because that is whats "normal". I don't want to give up my culture and I don't want anybody else to either! It would be just plain boring if we were all the same. I am proud of my roots, and I believe that people of different ethnicities have a lot to offer a society, we can all learn from each other and appreciate our cultural differences. I don't believe in a melting pot, we should not "blend" into one, but live together, acknowledging, accepting, and even loving our differences.

What's wrong with acknowledging where you're from? Yes the english were like that but they were forcibly conquered in numerous waves (Celtic, Romans, Nords, French etc) & even still parts of them didn't recognize the majority group & chose their culture. (Welsh)
I am Black. I am reminded by that by the lil things that happen along the way (being followed in stores, various ephitets, needing lotion after I take a shower, etc). I am and will always be american. I am reminded by that by the lil things that happen along the way. (My 'accent', way of life, No 1000 island dressing? are you for real?) To not accept or to ignore one of the two puts me at a disadvantage. I am what I am.

I may be one of only a few but I never see anything but the person and how they treat others around them . It has always been this way with me and I am caught off guard when I'm talking about something and say you know that guy and then someone says oh the bla bla bla guy , it is so childish and unnecessary . Can't people say oh the guy in the blue shirt ?

what your saying is trash talk. you wont a mongrel race don't you. no culture, just rap music for everyone?just mozart? cuss words every other word. no home. no traditions. God your weird. I will never give up my roots , my heritage. my way of expressing myself. my unique ways that come from my upbringing in the South, coming from family traditions. and etc. you should get real. That's what the Jewish media wont's us to be all the same. so we wont be anti Jewish, and so that they will be able to make one commercial on TV for everyone in the country and not make one for different regions, so they wont have to spend so much money on advertising. You don't have any heritage you know of or are proud of, your lost. don't think others wont to be lost, people need roots, black ,white, whatever, we should all be proud of our heritage.and express ourselves as unique individuals.

Ya that's right proper English will set us free...... you moron
its because of people like you who insist on pointing out minor flaws in people like incorrect grammar and other really important issues that keep this country spinning it's wheels over the same crap that should have been resolved years ago.

Former NYC Mayor David Dinkins called NYC "a Gorgeous Mosaic" Now, I had issues with old Dave but I have to applaud him on this one. Melting pot... an unrealistic goal. Mosaics can be beautiful !!! VIVE LA DIFERENCE

Yes, I am American born but my cultural heritage is still very important to me, ordinary though it is - English, Welsh, German, Scottish and Irish. People should never forget their family origins. They are with us wherever we happen to be born.

why do you think god made all the different races to start with. do you think it could be because he wanted all these different people so he could look down on his flock and see all the different color?
