Yep, if the magnet is strong enough it can cause damage to your HDD (remember its all magnet and orientation of molec that end up representing bits/bytes of data). Also it can effect your processor and not to mention screw up your CRT (Monitor - the colors will all get weird).

It is never a good idea to get magnets near your computer. There is always the potential to mess things up.
With that said, If he happens to have a weak magnet in a spot where the magnetic pull will not interfere with anything he could get by. But since its almost impossible to tell just how strong the magnetic pull is (at least from home, a lab could do it), he is better off not getting magnets near the computer.
The most likely thing the magnet will do is corrupt the hard drive. At best you would only lose files (possibly OS files), at worst it could permanently put a ad spot on the hard drive rendering the comp useless. It could also mess up memory, the ability to read/write CD/DVD, the processor...

A COMPUTER SCIENCE ANSWER Depending on the power of the magnet. See when you have current(Electricity) running through wires it creates a EMF(Electro Magnetic Field) and computers have lots of circuits(traces) in their systems. So it is possible for a magnet to cause EMI(Electro Magnetic Interference). This is why developers are careful when designing motherboards to keep the traces and wires far enough apart to reduce EMI. Hard drives work a little different. EMI is still possible but most likely, as mentioned above it will cause interference in the read/wirte opertation inside the hard drive with it's EMF that it creates.

stephen1424 I pretty sure you got it right any one who has ever taken a hard drive apart will know just how powerful the magnets are in them ( some have up to 4 magnets ) one of them could probabally hold more that 20 pounds so I doubt it will do anything to the hard drive as for a CD ROM they copy there information useing a laser light and the smallest thing Ive seen that can bend light even a little bit is the moon now if you have a old floppy drive it will erase them in nano seconds

Contrary to belief, the magnet can't not harm the data on your hardrive---You will need a HUGE magnet to do that. Putting the magnet on the tower, however is not a good idea, since your dvd/cd-rom drive does have a magnet in it. You may have trouble reading and writing data to the drive. But since it's only a 2X2 magnet you may be ok.

Keep all magnets away from your PC - they will destroy data on the hard drive.
Also keep magnets away from the monitor - I caused permanent damage to an old CRT monitor by waving a super-powerful magnet near it to watch how it twisted the image... it now has dark "bruises" which will not go away. Luckily it was old, but it shows what can happen.

Magnets can reorient the magnetic particles on your hard disk which can lead to data corruption. Magnets should be kept far away from you PC peripherals too. It can lead to distortion of you monitors display and their colours too if he magnets are strong. As far as PC is concerned, donot get near them.

It should be ok although it's not really worht the risk, just don't put it withing 20 cm of your monitor, it gradually mis places the pixels... and if it is on your tower, then the chances are it's near enough your monitor to do damage over a long period of time

Any magnets you can buy in a store would not do anything. the strongest magnet in your house is in your Hard drive. Go for it. just dont drop your drive... thats really bad.
