They don't. Animals can be killed at any time, in a number of ways. They're not allowed to be deliberately tortured, but they are allowed to be killed in ways that are painful, if it's deemed necessary or useful.
Humans have restrictions on when and how their unborn offspring can be destroyed.

The animals that are raised and slaughtered for meat, fur, and research would disagree. It's only when an animal becomes someone's personal pet that it has rights, and even then it's not much better then an unborn child. I could euthanize any of my pets for whatever reason I could come up with, or for no reason at all, just the same way that I could have an abortion if I were pregnant.

According to some philosophers, rights are only given to a person who is a rational, self-concious moral agent and that a fetus does not apply. Of course this debate will go on forever.

They don't.
Animals have "people" whom support their existence over a humans rights or feelings. Can you imagine that?
If they really get defensive, remind them that God is in charge, not us.
Just in case they don't believe you...or Him...
Genesis 1
26 Then God said, "Let us make man in our image, in our likeness, and let them rule over the fish of the sea and the birds of the air, over the livestock, over all the earth, [b] and over all the creatures that move along the ground."
