I would say that isn't normal. My doctor has always checked for a heart beat. In fact since we couldn't hear one at 9 weeks she did an ultrasound. I would call your doctor and ask why they didn't at least look for the heartbeat and if you aren't satisfied I would suggest finding a new doctor. Good luck and congrats

The doctor probably didn't feel inside because there is nothing to feel for and any invasive assessment posses the risk of infection although this is a small risk. If you think they should check the cervix to make sure it's closed, the vast majority of the time, the cervix is close anyway, and without any other symptoms, the question is the risk. He may not have checked for a heartbeat because there would be no reason to. If you don't hear a heartbeat, (heaven forbid) you had lost the child-spontaneous miscarrage, you would have had other symptoms. Otherwise, there is no other reason to check the heartbeat in a fetus, other than it sounds nice to hear. At this early stage, sometimes it is difficult to hear the fetal heart tones and the sound can be confused with the mothers heart beat, (since the child is still very small and sits over a major artery).

Think about it, having your legs up in stir-ups is not the most fun thing to do. As long as you are not having any other symptoms, I would not worry. Since it is always fun to hear the heart beat, ask at the next visit for one.

The only thing the doctor should have done is measured your belly and listened to the heartbeat and asked you a few questions about how you are doing, are you swelling, etc....My doctor didnt listen to the heartbeat until I was 12 weeks though. THat is when you can usually hear it best. So maybe she will do it routinely from the next visits and on. You wont have another pelvic exam until towards the end of the pregnancy.

Ummm usually they will listen to the heartbeat. I just went to the doctor for the 3rd time because of insurance issues. He took blood work and all kinds of other things because I'd missed it. He measured my uterus and also heard the heartbeat. I also have an ultrasound in a couple weeks. I would say it isn't normal. They should usually check the hearbeat.

the dr won't listen for a heartbeat until between 10 to 13 weeks. Your next exam will be more thorough I am sure. And from there they will schedule your ultrasound.

No, he did measure abdominal area to make sure baby was growing...? weigh? pee sample for diabetes and other infections? talk to you? Honey, not every visit is wine and roses. Next month you will be saying doc wants all this? You will probably hear the heartbeat, sonagram scheduled for growth rate, due date and abnormalities...you will be scheduling classes for delivery techniques about another two months or in the spring...Relax, enjoy; for in a short time-no sleep when the bundle arrives...

They're suppose to listen to the heartbeat at every visit. I can understand not doing an ultrasound but to not listen for the heartbeat wasn't right. You should have asked. So what exactly did he do at you appointment?

No, that is not normal every prenatal visit the doc is supposed to listen to your baby's heart beat. If I was you i would make another appointment with him and tell him you want him and for you to listen to your baby heart beat. how would he no if every thing is okay. and if he has a problem with doing that then I would report him and get another doctor. It is his job to make sure nothing goes wrong with your baby, that is a lawsuit waiting to happen.

Normally docs do internal exam every checkup and should start checking for heart beat at 12wks then at every exam. Thats what the docs did for both my pregnancies. I would call the doc and talk to his nurse about this. if you dont feel comfortable then you need to switch docs. Good Luck and Take Care.

doctors dont feel inside every appointment. they check everything at your first one usually and then won't again until around 36 weeks, unless they have reason to believe you might be dilating or be concerned about anything. the doctor should listen for the heart beat at every appointment though, unless you have an ultrasound they wouldn't need to because you can see the heart beating. so you should ask about that.
